Definition Step 2 for Paper 2

What is your claim?

My claim is individuals going into the profession of teaching should have certain credentials that allow them to become a good and well rounded teacher.

Who is your audience?

My audience is geared toward teachers.

What values are you basing your claim up on (In other words, what criteria are you using to make this definition?)

The values that I am basing my claim upon are simple criteria in order to become a good teacher.

What defines a good teacher?

Caring, helpful, responsible, respectful, considerate, understanding each individual student, and the list goes on and on.

What can teachers do to become a good teacher?

A lot of teachers have criteria that you can’t teach, such as attitude characteristics. Something that helps the process of transforming into a good teacher is attending school and learning as much as possible about teaching so that it can later on benefit students.

Do students learn as much from a “bad teacher” as they do a good one?

This topic is very widely debated. Students learn at different paces and learn in different ways. One student may learn when the teacher is helpful and very caring. Another student may learn when he or she is being pushed to the limit with stern instructions.

Do you think your audience does/does not share your values? If so, how might you approach your definition? If not, what will you have to do when you craft your argument?

Yes I think my audience will share my values because what teachers do, crafts the minds of generations that will eventually go out into the work force. I am going to approach this topic very specific even though people have different believes and ideas of what a good teacher is and how they run their classroom. The best thing I can do is to come at every angle of what a good teacher is and does.
