Types of Arguments

Part 1

An argument can be made from any text that expresses a point of view. Large newspapers to small ones tend to get their point across in many different types of articles. While some of the motifs are different, an argument can be made for any text that expresses point of view. The Onion has an article that is suggesting that many Americans are still unsure of who to elect in the 2008 election. Within the article, people are quoted for saying who they would vote against and why. This could impact the votes of people who read “The Onion”. USA Today has an article describing many features of the new iPhone. Within the article, it suggests that people with long fingers can use the iPhone with only one hand while many people with normal sized fingers have to use two. This article can be negative to the selling of the iPhone because since the phone is rather long, some people might want a phone that they are able to use with one hand. The South Bend Tribune has articles ranging from State Tax debate to an article focusing on a woman who wanted to buy a small car because of gas prices. It goes into detail about the benefits of owning a small car. They also discuss the best selling small vehicles.

Part 2

Deliberative Argument- In USA Today, there is an article that suggests that John Edwards wants to increase cancer research along with support. He wants to create support networks for people dealing with the disease and encourage lifestyle changes to help keep others from getting it. This is deliberative because it might happen in the future. Many of the deliberative arguments establish policies for the future.

Epideictic Argument- In USA Today, an article informs readers that Attorney General Gonzales resigns. There are debates by the writers asking whether or not Gonzales was ever the right person for the job. He is quoted multiple times in there expressing his gratitude and the excitement it brought to his life. This article is epideictic because it deals with civic remarks and is in the present.

Forensic Argument- The South Bend Tribune has an article that refers to Hurricane Katrina and the aide that is available. Both Republican and Democratic future candidates complained about the aide that is being sent and offered to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This article subject is using forensic argument because the article is retelling an event that took place in the past which is impacting the future.

While in California..

The most exciting event that has ever happened to me would be going on a trip to California. I went with my family and had a tremendous time. We shopped in Beverly Hills and went to Disney Land. The variety of good is incredible. There are so many different cultures in a large city and going there brought that to my attention. I fell in love with Los Angeles because of the city lights at night and the overall atmosphere of the city. Los Angeles has many different walks of life and visiting made me appreciate that much more. So far, it has been the best vacation of my life.
